ABSTRACT: In this presentation, Professor Jim Thompson will re-introduce a US health macrodynamics model built in 2002-2006. Using data from the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS), the US Census Bureau, and other public domain sources, the model serves two basic purposes: analysis of policy choices from analytic equilibrium and prediction of real world conditions.
Having served its designed purpose 15 years ago, can the model help to explain the observed current behavior of the US healthcare system and be extended to make predictions to inform policy?

Biography: James P. Thompson is an independent strategy consultant, specializing in the application of system dynamics methodology in the field of healthcare, and is an Affiliate Research Scientist at Worcester Polytechnic Institute. In 2012, Jim retired as head of the Health Systems Design Lab at the Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School Program in Health Services and Systems Research, where he led research in national health policy issues. Before joining the Graduate Medical School, Jim was a strategy consultant for commercial and governmental clients, and from 2000 to 2007, he directed economic research for Cigna HealthCare. He received his PhD in management science at University of Strathclyde, Glasgow UK.
