Awards Committee

Winter Policy Council E-Meeting January/February 2008

Motion 103 proposed by James Lyneis, seconded by Bob Eberlein: Section 3 of the Policy 9 of Society Bylaws shall be revised to read: The Awards Committee shall, with the approval of the Policy Council, establish awards, define the procedures to be followed in making those awards, and appoint the committees responsible for administering the awards. The awards may be in recognition of outstanding work in system dynamics or may take the form of scholarships to promote access to conferences and other activities related to system dynamics.

Motion 107 proposed by James Lyneis, seconded by Bob Eberlein: As specified by Society Policies, as President I nominate the following six people to serve on the Society’s Awards Committee (with staggered three year terms), to take affect immediately: David Andersen, Andy Ford, David Lane, Erling Moxnes, Khalid Saeed, and Kim Warren.

The intent of Society Policies is to have an umbrella committee and then separate committees to administer specific awards. It seems time to establish a separate umbrella awards committee as implied in the Society Policies. It seems desirable to have broader input into the establishment of possible additional Society awards, the management of the awards, and their funding. There are also issues related to awards proposed and funded by outside parties, and how they fit into the conference program and are distinguished from Society Awards. The idea for such an umbrella committee was discussed and approved at the face-to-face Policy Council Meeting on January 31; 2008 additional reaction seems to be positive, and therefore the next action of President James Lyneis is to appoint such a committee, with Policy Council approval, as specified in Society Policies.

The proposal is that the Awards Committee consist of six members: three who are former Presidents and/or JWF Award winners, and three who are representatives from the existing awards committees. Society policies specify that committees consist of at least three members with staggered terms; in order to have 3-year terms, the committee would need to be either 3 or 6 members, so President James Lyneis opted for 6. The nominees (subsequently approved) are: Khalid Saeed, Chair (JWF Committee) 2008-2010; Andy Ford (DM Committee) 2008, 2009-2011; Kim Warren (Applications Committee) 2008-2010; David Andersen (President 1984/85 and JWF Committee) 2008, 2009-2011; Erling Moxnes (President 2009 and JWF Committee) 2008-2009; and David Lane (JWF Award Winner) 2008-2009.

The President will name replacements as needed.
