Dear Members:

The Society’s home moved to the University at Albany January 1, 1997. In November of that year, we hired Jennifer Rowe to help, part-time, with our beer game sales and other Society central office tasks. Over the years, Jen’s time commitment increased to 75% and then finally to full-time. Furthermore, Jen’s responsibilities increased. Among a number of vital daily and continuous operating tasks and procedures, she is entirely responsible for all membership issues from developing and maintaining the database to managing membership payments, to the complex synchronizing of information including the on-line membership directory and the web submission system. If you are a member, or have attended a conference, or purchased a product from the Society, Jen has gladly helped you.

“I have truly enjoyed working with system dynamics folks from around the world,” Jen says. “And, I have learned a lot—you can’t work in this office for long without adopting a systems perspective on just about everything!”

The exciting news is that Jen has decided to attend law school. After over 10 years of excellent service to the Society, Jen is starting a new chapter in her life. Jen will be missed here. Please join me in wishing Jen best wishes and much success as she embarks on this new journey.

Further exciting news! Please join me in welcoming Erin Sheehan. Erin will join the central office staff on July 1st. Erin’s background in working with non-profit organizations matches nicely and will complement the requirements of this position. We look forward to Erin joining the team.

Change can be challenging but Jen has arranged to stay until August 1st giving Jen and Erin one month of side-by-side instruction. This position has many unique aspects; with cross training and collaboration, the entire office staff will work together toward a seamless transfer of the knowledge base for continuous services for all our members and multiple projects.

News and Notes

New SIG Formally Accepted by Policy Council

The Inter- and Intranational Conflict (IINC) Special Interest Group was approved by the Policy Council on 3 March 2008. The SIG is concerned with the application of system dynamics to understanding inter- and intranational conflict, e.g. military and political conflict, terrorism, insurgency, etc. There is a wide range of interested individuals, both academics and practitioners, currently applying the system dynamics approach to this area. Much of this work has not been published or is difficult to obtain.

The primary goal of the IINC SIG is to link together those system dynamics researchers with an interest in building models of inter- and intranational conflict, including such topics as wars, balance-of-power negotiations, insurgencies, and terrorism. There has been a great deal of work in quantitative models of international relations and political science relating to this area. However, with few exceptions, these models exclude feedback dynamics, limiting their explanatory power. Hence, we would like to leverage the SIG to build a critical mass of system dynamics researchers interested in this area to: (1) promote dissemination of new system dynamics work in the area of conflict modeling throughout the system dynamics community; (2) help bridge the gap with researchers from other fields interested in these topics; and (3) more effectively influence policy makers.

Ed Anderson and Len Malczynski will serve as the leaders of the group, responsible for reporting to the Policy Council.


ASysT Prize Awarded

A team of nine system dynamics modelers, group facilitators, and public health scholars has been selected as the winner of the inaugural Applied Systems Thinking prize (ASysT), honoring accomplishment in applying systems thinking to a problem of national significance in the United States. The winning team—led by Bobby Milstein of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)—has worked at the CDC continuously since 2002 to develop and disseminate simulation models related to chronic disease, intertwined epidemics, community health, and national health policy. The modelers on the team include Jack Homer, Gary Hirsch, Andrew Jones, and Kristina Wile.

The other team members include Joyce Essien (Emory University), Doc Klein (consultant), Patty Mabry (National Institutes of Health), and Diane Orenstein (CDC). The team will present a seminar on its work at the Arlington, Virginia headquarters of Analytic Services Inc., on July 25, 2008, as part of ASI’s 50th Anniversary Gala. It will also receive a cash award of $20,000, which will be deposited with the CDC Foundation to support the team’s continued work in public health modeling.

New Appointment for David Wheat

David Wheat has been appointed as Associate Professor in System Dynamics at the University of Bergen. David has a Masters degree in Public Policy from the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University and a PhD in System Dynamics from the University of Bergen. He is known to many of you as the recipient of last year’s Dana Meadows Award and as the current President of the Economics Chapter of the System Dynamics Society. David will teach modelling and development in our International Masters Program in System Dynamics, advise Masters and PhD students, and do research in economics, teaching, etc.

New Appointment for Kambiz Maani

Kambiz Maani, a long-standing member of the System Dynamics Society, has been recently appointed as the AgResearch Chair in Systems Thinking and Practice in the School of Natural and Rural Systems Management of the University of Queensland. The Chair was established in 2007 as a joint appointment between AgResearch in New Zealand and the University of Queensland in Australia. The University of Queensland (UQ) is one of the largest and most prestigious of the Australia’s 39 universities. It ranked 33 in the 2007 Financial Times survey of world universities. AgResearch is New Zealand’s largest Crown Research Institute and conducts research and development that underpins the pastoral sector’s sustainability and profitability. It has over 700 research scientists located predominantly at four major research centres.

The University of Queensland and AgResearch believe that systems thinking and its application will underpin research and education for moving towards sustainable futures. The Chair in Systems Thinking and Practice will support both organizations to become a global “reference point” in systems thinking and practice. The role requires facilitating the development and application of systems theory and methodologies in solving complex problems in sustainable management of agro-ecosystems, and providing leadership to help build a systems culture and appropriate capacity in both organisations.

Prior to this position Kambiz has held a leading role at the University of Auckland Business School in conducting research, developing programs and offering management education in systems thinking around the world. He has been an active member of the Society since 1998, participating in annual conferences and contributing research to the System Dynamics Review. His book with Bob Cavana: Systems Thinking, System Dynamics — Managing Change and Complexity (Prentice Hall, 2nd Edition 2007) is one of the most widely used systems text and reference books around the world.


16th MIT—UAlbany—WPI System Dynamics PhD Colloquium


Students (and faculty) from University at Albany, MIT and WPI gathered on the steps of Page Hall in Albany on Friday, April 25th, after a day-long PhD Colloquium. This twice-a-year event started in the Fall of 2000.

SYstem Dynamics Italian Chapter News

SYstem Dynamics Italian Chapter Hosted Club of Rome Meeting, June 16–17, 2008

Rome (and it couldn’t be elsewhere!) hosted the Aurelio Peccei Centenary Conference — Club of Rome 40th Anniversary Meeting on June 16–17th.

Inside the beautiful new Auditorium della Musica (Music Auditorium), for two days, important scientists and politicians discussed about strategies for a sustainable development of the planet, and remembered Peccei’s figure and thoughts.

It is needless to say that such a cultural event is extremely important, for the entire scientific community as well as for the society as a whole, but it is particularly relevant for any researcher having to do with system dynamics and surely for the System Dynamics Society.

In fact, Aurelio Peccei, who was a great man before being a scientist, at the beginning of the 1970s proposed to a group of young researchers, led at the time at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) by J. W. Forrester, to undertake an important project for the Club of Rome and for humanity.

The project aimed at describing the global ‘World Problems’ through a mathematical model (quite a risky task at the time and even now) that had to represent the various aspects connected to a sustainable economic growth and which could have been used as a guideline for possible future actions. The scenarios clearly showed that continuing to misuse the earth’s resources would in turn lead humanity towards a global disaster in a short time. The results of the project were afterwards published in the famous report: The Limits to Growth.

For this important event, members of SYDIC (SYstem Dynamics Italian Chapter) partook in the conference in order to cover the event with fully detailed reporting and possibly also with some interviews of important personalities. SYstem Dynamics Italian Chapter Website Updated

During this year a lot of work was done on the SYDIC website.

The website was completely re-designed with the intent of creating a valuable tool for the SYDIC members as well as of constituting a reference point for those involved in system dynamics in Italy. The simple website that the older version of was became a real web community, which aims to promote and spread system dynamics at all levels: academic and professional, both in public and private sectors.

To realize the SYDIC on-line community we began to study web marketing strategies and we then analyzed groupware tools (groupware is a platform to support collaborative work or CSCW–Computer Supported Cooperative Work).

The site offers the possibility of finding information and documentation in general on system dynamics, and in particular to see who (and how) in Italy, researchers and professionals, work in system dynamics (each member can become visible through the possibility of creating his/her own homepage on the site). It also allows all members to interact through a forum.

We have included a series of web pages dedicated to the history of system dynamics and to the methodology description; a specific area is dedicated to useful links for those (rookies) who are approaching system dynamics with the addition of a list of suitable and recommended references.

Another option which it has been decided is necessary to include is a function dedicated to document sharing management between the members of the community. Towards this end, we have introduced some standard applications through which each user will be able to upload documents, models or other software, classified according to different selected parameters.

In order to support the diffusion of the discipline in Italy, a peculiar page has been created where anybody can search to find who (and where) are the other community members in Italy, and once one finds a specific member, some synthetic information will be immediately available. This kind of page has been suitably created also in order to ensure visibility to the members of SYDIC. Each member can always check the personal and common information that he/she considers useful to put in evidence at any user availability. To ensure a simple and fast visibility form, we decided to adopt the personal page tool; in fact every member can create inside the website, and in a completely autonomous way, a real personal homepage.

To ensure a more efficient communication by the SYDIC management towards the members, we decided to use, as a messaging tool, a classic e-mail tool; this has been set up in a newsletter site mode. Every user/member can however decide to join or not the newsletter mailing list, in order to ensure the maximum freedom. When SYDIC intends to announce new web contents or new events, this can be communicated by means of an e-mail to all the members who have subscribed to the mailing list. Finally, as a cooperation tool and for the knowledge/opinion exchange between users, we have chosen to create a forum environment.

SYDIC’s web community is on-line since November 2007, and now we have more than 70 users. We have received good feedback from users and we are working to increase the web community.

UK Chapter Gathering in February, 2008


The UK Chapter of the System Dynamics Society held its annual gathering this year in London. For many years we have convened at Harrogate, a charming spa town in North Yorkshire, but it was felt that in 2008 we needed to break the mould and so we used the splendid facilities offered by London South Bank University.

Our two-day programme was collaborative with the SD+ Study Group of the Operational Research Society and thanks go to Sally Brailsford for facilitating the joint event.

The decision to re-locate to London was clearly a success since we had over 65 people attending and the general consensus was that it was a very useful session indeed.

The format was as in previous years: presentations were given on the Thursday afternoon following which delegates could engage with any or all of the speakers in informal focus group sessions which reported back to the plenary gathering at the conclusion. After an enjoyable evening buffet we reconvened the following day.



We were fortunate to have perhaps one of the best slates of speakers we have ever been able to offer at these gatherings.

John Morecroft and Stewart Robinson kicked things off with a presentation on fisheries. What was particularly novel about their talk was that John presented the problem from a system dynamics perspective while Stewart took a discrete-event simulation (DES) based approach. Here in a nutshell was evidence of the collaborative slant of the entire event and the links between the system dynamics and OR fraternities. John and Stewart concluded that, for system dynamics, the future is “partly and significantly pre-determined”, whilst for DES “it is partly and significantly a matter of chance”.

Next up was Colin Eden who spoke on combining problem structuring and system dynamics group modelling. Here again the talk meshed well with our themes: problem structuring tools being associated with ‘soft OR’ and group modelling with system dynamics.

We finished the presentation session with a talk from Jim Lyneis, the current President of the System Dynamics Society, and someone whom we were fortunate to have on this side of the pond at the right moment! Jim delivered a talk on the integration of system dynamics models with other tools and approaches, informed by 25 years of his experience as a consultant.

The Thursday evening concluded with a buffet and wine. Again our thanks to LSBU for laying on such an enjoyable occasion to end the day—and for documenting the Speakers’ Presentational Materials (ISBN 1 87418-66-7).



Two prizes were awarded during the course of the two-day meeting. The newly inaugurated Steer Davies Gleave prize, for the best piece of work using system dynamics to address a topic of wide public interest, was awarded to Symmetric SD for their work entitled “Improving Access to Mental Health, both Locally and Nationally”. The Symmetric team consisted of Professor Eric Wolstenholme, Non-Executive Director of Symmetric and Professor of Business Learning at London South Bank University; David Monk and David Todd, both Directors of Symmetric; Douglas McKelvie, an Associate of Symmetric; and Dean Repper, Director, Care Services Improvement Partnership Northwest, Department of Health UK.

Prize Winners

Accepting their prize, a cheque for £500, the team announced they would be donating it to The Parkinson’s Disease Society and Mind, two UK charities concerned with health issues.

The Chapter Student Prize went to Giuseppe Santoro for his work entitled “The Development of the Biodiesel Industry and its Implications for the Glycerine Industry.” Giuiseppe, who now works for Dow Europe GmbH, carried out this work while studying under the supervision of John Morecroft at the London Business School.

Workshop session

The Friday morning session again returned to the theme of system dynamics and DES. Antuela Tako, a PhD candidate at Warwick University, facilitated a workshop on prison population models. She was interested in learning whether delegates reached the same or different conclusions from interacting with two live models: both on prison populations but one using DES and running under Simul8 and the other using system dynamics and running under iThink. This was a fascinating innovation and something I have not experienced before. We await Antuela’s thesis to learn the results for we all filled out a response form to offer our impressions and answers to specific questions.


PhD Colloquium

The afternoon session on the Friday witnessed our first-ever PhD Colloquium. We were initially apprehensive about the likely success of this venture, one that had first surfaced when we sent around a questionnaire soliciting comments from research students in system dynamics in the UK. We need not have worried. After a short introduction from Sally Brailsford (which included the now legendary slide depicting the almost exponential growth of the number of ‘hits’ on the Web of Science of articles with system dynamics and health in the title, abstract or keywords over the past 16 years or so) we convened around 12 poster boards to review the work of current PhD students in the UK. Thanks to all who took the trouble to prepare a poster and thanks also to Mike Quigley (University of Salford) who organised the colloquium.

Following the meeting we received an e-mail from Simon Cross, MD who is a Reader in the Academic Unit of Pathology in the School of Medicine at the University of Sheffield. He is a recent ‘convert’ to system dynamics. He concluded his message:

“The annual gathering was a very valuable way of getting an overview of system dynamics in the UK, and I was also struck by how friendly and approachable everyone was (which is in rather stark contrast to the biomedical research conferences that I usually attend)”.

2008 Athens Conference Update

The conference will bring together approximately 500 people working in system dynamics and systems thinking. Presentations by practitioners and world leaders in the field will cover a wide variety of topics.



Tentative Schedule: Presentation abstracts, a number of full papers and supporting materials are available for preview on-line; simply follow the links. The conference program will consist of invited and contributed sessions and workshops demonstrating the state of the art in the theory and application of system dynamics.

In addition, panel discussions, special interest group sessions, student colloquia, the modeling assistance workshop, vendor displays, exhibits, demonstrations, Society business meetings and other related activities will be scheduled. The conference schedule will provide time for relaxed social and professional interaction.

The conference will bring together diverse perspectives on the application of system dynamics to important issues in the theory of complex dynamic systems and the practical use of these tools to address critical real-world challenges.

Thursday Workshop Description: The Athens conference will offer many workshop sessions for you to choose from. If you are planning to attend any of the workshops, you can find links to a tentative Preliminary Sessions and Workshops by Thread schedule as well as full workshop descriptions with titles, and presenters of each workshop in the program section of the conference web page. Some workshop presenters ask that you bring certain materials or do some reading in advance so please read the specific workshop information carefully.

Modeling Assistance Workshop (MAW): Jack Homer and Etiënne Rouwette will facilitate the Annual Modeling Assistance Workshop. Modeling assistance is available at the conference to enable modelers to discuss their specific modeling questions with modeling coaches. Modeling assistance opportunities include two public workshops, as well as the possibility of assistance at any time during the conference. Assistance is available for modelers with all levels of modeling ability, from beginner to advanced, with questions about a specific model that modelers are developing or studying, or to better understand something in a book, an article, or a software package. Modeling questions may deal with problem articulation, formulation of a dynamic hypothesis, formulation of a simulation model, model testing, or policy design and evaluation. Modelers should bring whatever materials they need to describe their question, including pencil and paper, books, posters, or laptop computers. Spectators are welcome to observe modeling assistance during the two public sessions.

2009 Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA July 26–30, 2009

Complexio is currently responsible for three research projects for which system dynamics is used.

“Dynacité” is a project funded by the French Environment and Energy Management Agency (ADEME) under the French programme of research, experimentation and innovation in land transport (PREDIT). Periurbanization and urban sprawl are well-known phenomenons but are still increasing despite a growing concern for sustainable mobility. Some studies carried out with local public actors highlighted paradoxes coming from a likely incoherence between objectives followed by actors, and an apparent lack of cohesion between local and national public policies. In this research, periurbanization is analysed from a different—and maybe unusual—perspective, i.e. from interplays between actors situated at different geographical and institutional levels. A modelling and simulation of those interplays using system dynamics seems to be especially appropriate in order to understand those paradoxes. Results of the simulations could be used by public policies and local actors; indeed the model must be considered as a pedagogical tool and as a decision support tool that can help identify possible leverages for public policies. Final results will be delivered in July 2008.

“TEOL” (Logistics and Shipment Size) is a project funded by public institutes including the French National Institute for Transport and Safety Research (INRETS) and the French Ministry of Transport. Modeling is based on data coming from a large national survey carried out in 2004 on freight shipments. Final report and results will be delivered at the end of 2008.

“Carbone-Fret” (Carbon-Freight) is a project funded by the French Environment and Energy Management Agency (ADEME) under the French programme of research, experimentation and innovation in land transport (PREDIT); it is carried out in collaboration with the French National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS). At least two different tools are at the disposal of public policies in order to reduce freight transport pollutants—taxes and emissions trading. For this research project we assume that negotiable permits are to be considered as a new element to be taken in trade-offs that are involved in logistical decisions made by shippers. Taxes and emissions trading can play a very different role in logistical trade-offs, and consequently in the way pollutant emissions will evolve; negotiable permits could constitute a clearer economic signal to actors. Different scenarios will be explored using system dynamics and the expertise developed in carbon rationing by CNRS. Intermediate and final results will be delivered in 2009.


CRA International, Inc.

Greg Szwartz recently joined CRA as a Principal in the Enterprise Risk Management practice. He brings over 10 years of experience using dynamic models to assess risk in a variety of business sectors and markets. Before joining CRA, Mr. Szwartz developed a system dynamics-based suite of business planning models for pharmaceutical clients. He also has experience using system dynamics for IT investment planning, insurance marketing strategy and compliance system dynamics.
Philip Helmes, Vice President, and Margaret Fulenwider, Associate Principal, continue to develop a commercially viable project planning and control tool based on system dynamics for the construction industry. The United States Patent and Trademark Office recently granted a patent application called “Dynamic Planning Method and System” based in part on system dynamics to inventors Feniosky Pena-Mora, Moonseo Park, SangHyun Lee, Michael Li, and Margaret Fulenwider. A second patent application called “Reliability Buffering Technique Applied to A Project Planning Model” is patent pending.


Global Strategy Dynamics

Most of our activity for the last few months has been based around Kim Warren’s new textbook, Strategic Management Dynamics, from Wiley. For more information see and Although aimed at core MBA strategy courses, the book is fundamentally based on solid system dynamics principles. 

The book focuses on the continuous and holistic strategic management of organizations over time; how to drive earnings growth in business cases, or pursue other aims in public services and not-for-profit organizations. It starts by laying out how the tangible resources of a business (‘stocks’ in system dynamics language) work together quantitatively to deliver performance from period to period, developing and exploiting market opportunities as they do so. The book goes on to show how competitive rivalry plays out over time, and how these dynamics interact with changing market conditions. It also deals with intangible factors like morale and reputation (more stocks!), and the policies management sets to drive performance improvements.

Global Strategy Dynamics is pleased to be launching further activities and courses supporting the book, starting with a program of low-cost teacher courses which started in May, and reaching out to a general strategy audience. Homer Consulting

Jack continues to consult with both private and public sector clients, and to write published research papers and do public speaking. In 2008, he has continued his relationship (since 1996) with Harley-Davidson by developing a new model to help them address recent weakness in US demand for motorcycles. He has also been working with a variety of agencies in the US and overseas on problems related to public health. He has continued his relationship (since 2001) with the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, where his recent projects address diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and overall health system reform. He has also worked with state and county health departments in Colorado and Minnesota on local applications of the diabetes and cardiovascular disease work. He is also working with an international health agency to model the mix of clinical and community services for HIV/AIDS therapy patients in Zambia. An exploratory project with the US Food and Drug Administration is addressing food labeling regulations and how they affect the availability, pricing, and marketing of “healthy” food products.  He has also recently visited New Zealand to support work by Synergia Ltd. (Auckland) on a variety of issues and projects with the Ministry of Health and district health boards, including models of cardiovascular disease management, long term care, and health board finances.

Publications in 2007 and 2008 have appeared in Preventing Chronic Disease, System Dynamics Review, and the Encyclopedia of Complexity and System Science. Recent speaking engagements have been for the National Institutes of Health, the University of Michigan, Auckland University’s School of Population Health, and the University of New South Wales (Sydney). Jack also contributes to the Society’s annual International Conference as co-chair of the Health Thread, co-director of the Modeling Assistance Workshop, organizer of the Thursday Workshops, and member of the Jay W. Forrester Award and Lupina Award committees.

The Research Committee of the University of Patras

Rockefeller College, State University of New York, University at Albany

Rockefeller College at the University at Albany continues its teaching program by offering three graduate courses in system dynamics to our Masters and PhD students as well as one undergraduate course. This past year, David Andersen and George Richardson have been working on group model building projects with the United States Department of Homeland Security. Rod MacDonald and the Initiative for System Dynamics in the Public Sector has ongoing research projects with the National Institute of Justice and the New York State Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee. Furthermore, a PhD has been placed with the New York State Office of Mental Health in order to develop a system dynamics models to examine workload issues for service providers.

New Systems Based Programs at the University of Queensland


The University of Queensland (UQ) is one the largest and most prestigious of Australia’s Universities. It ranked 33 in the 2007 Financial Times survey of world universities. It is located in Brisbane, the fastest growing city in Australia and the capital of Queensland—the “Smart Sunshine State”.

The University of Queensland is strongly committed to systems thinking research and education as a key discipline for moving towards sustainable futures. Currently various UQ faculties and schools are building bridges between their core business and environmental sciences and management, under the global drive towards ‘sustainability’. Thus health, business, architecture, agriculture and the social sciences recognise and seek to contribute to a more sustainable social and earth system.

The School of Natural & Rural Systems Management (NRSM) is a unique multidisciplinary School where its core business is in systems approaches for integrating the environment with business, social and economics dimensions.



The School has made a significant investment in its systems thinking and technology platforms to reach and stay in a leadership position with respect to systems approaches. To this end the School has recently established and appointed a Chair in Systems Thinking & Practice. The School sees a systemic cross-disciplinary approach as the only way to deal with complex management problems to help build a sustainable future. The School has special expertise in integrated PhD research in natural, social, and business systems. Examples of current research include systems approaches for sustainability (learning lab for sustainability) for the UNESCO biosphere project in Viet Nam, incorporating three key stakeholders: the environment, the community and the tourism industry.

The School also offers a popular Master in Rural Systems Management which focuses on developing countries. In addition to a wide range of courses (graduate and undergraduate) in systems thinking and system dynamics, the School is developing a new systems based cross-disciplinary Master in Sustainable Systems integrating natural, social, physical and business dimensions. The core courses of this program include “systems thinking for sustainability” and “the principles of sustainability”. The degree is designed to cater to the emerging and fast growing professions in integrating sustainability fields: business and economics, design and engineering, and policy and governance.

Ventana Systems UK

Ventana Systems UK continues to provide Vensim® software, training and consultancy to the UK and Europe. We have been conducting a range of modelling engagements from multispecies fisheries models in the North Sea to pharmaceutical product manufacturing and market placement. We have also recently completed the InCoCo research project, a groundbreaking project that will enable companies to deliver integrated service solutions to industry.

As part of the InCoCo research project we have developed the InCoCo-S Business Game. This dynamic model of production related service networks is based on a synthesis of existing theoretical knowledge and the practical experiences of the InCoCo-S consortium. The developed simulation model has been validated using different approaches of testing the underlying simulation structure, validating the pattern of results in a dynamic environment and by investigating the robustness of the emerging model.

Based on the simulation model, an educational “gaming tool” for facilitating integrated learning of coordination concepts, collaboration and performance measures in a real world scenario has been developed. This tool helps a novice / professional to get useful insights into the interactions and interdependencies amongst diverse partners and the sensitivity that drives the chain. This web based tool will further support the project in disseminating results to a wider society.

The Whole Systems Partnership

The Whole Systems Partnership (WSP) has recently undertaken several projects for clients in the UK health and social care sector. These have included a strategic review of performance for a large County Council in England which has helped them to understand the relationship between support in the community for older people to maintain their independence and the rate of admissions to long term nursing or residential home care. Other recent projects have focussed on intermediate care and services for older people with mental health needs.

WSP have also facilitated a learning partnership between themselves, a long standing client and Brunel University as part of a major multi-centred feasibility study into the application of modelling approaches to healthcare in the UK.

Worcester Polytechnic Institute

As the field of system dynamics continues to grow, so does the number of students enrolled in courses in WPI’s Online System Dynamics Programs. Graduate courses start in September, January and May. The completely on-line curriculum allows students around the world to enroll in individual courses, a graduate certificate, or a Master of Science program. Current students live globally including Australia, Brazil, Spain, Indonesia, Canada, Uruguay, India, and the U.S. 

Oleg Pavlov, who is active in the Economics and Russian Chapters of the System Dynamics Society, was awarded tenure and promoted to Associate Professor of Economics and System Dynamics at WPI. Oleg’s research focuses on the dynamics of economics and policy.

WPI congratulates Professor of Practice Jim Lyneis on his service as President of the International System Dynamics Society for 2008.

Strategy Dynamics is always a sought-after course in the program, and with a recent update, it is expected to be even more challenging and popular. The instructor for Strategy Dynamics is Kim Warren and his new text Strategic Management Dynamics is the backbone for this course. Students in recent classes have undertaken quite diverse projects as business development strategy for a professional football club, start-up strategy for a vegan food brand, capacity expansion at an aircraft maker, and how DVD-rental business Netflix should deal with the threat from on-line availability of movies. Commercial projects using the approach have included turning round a struggling law-firm, entry to the US market for a European-made consumer medical device, and competitive strategy for a bank’s business-sector division.

Environmental pollution is of worldwide concern. Andrew Ford, who teaches the WPI Environmental Dynamics course, recently published an article in ENERGY POLICY, Vol. 36, 2008 titled “Simulation Scenarios for Rapid Reduction in Carbon Dioxide Emissions in the Western Electricity System.” His simulations indicate that dramatic reductions in emissions are possible with generating technologies that exist today.
