People should be encouraged to ask any question they want, and novices
will, of course, end up asking old questions. That's fine. I'm not
asking questioners to censor themselves, but have rather asked that the
inexperienced think twice before laying out a thousand-word treatise
attempting to answer (from their perspective typically coming from some
other field, and ignorant of ours) something already well answered in
our field. I posted previously about how the extended (and repeated)
discussion of old questions can be dismaying to experienced SD people,
and I have already received a few private emails from experienced SD
people confirming that this is exactly why they have largely disengaged
from the listserve.
