Jack Homer said that "Useful data, like the model's structure itself, emerge
iteratively over the course of a project."

This points out a slightly different use of SD in what I would call scientific
SD modeling: the application of SD to, for example, coupled natural - human
systems (as in health or natural resources etc). In establishing "research
projects" I think that is very useful to model early and often. This iterative
approach can help define what data are necessary to understand the issues being
examined, and will help define the sub-areas of research necessary to obtain
that data. Modeling in this sense is not (only) an end product, but a tool to
define the research agenda.
