My experience of data collection over 25 years or so has been that I'm
invariably offered data when I mention it. It is the stuff that clients
believe will assist them meet targets.
The very fact that the client is failing to do this is why they invited me
in. So, we start again, and it is at the end of the initial work, of
understanding what the demand is for service, of the value that customers
place of that service, and how their processes have been "designed" and work
(usually ignorant of the demand) that we can agree that we need different,
customer demand and process capability related data.
The SD maps are an important component in that understanding stage, and of
course, when we come to redesign based on demand, value and flow.
