The OnStar work done by GM definitely falls under the heading of 
modeling a business ecosystem.  You can read about it in:

Barabba, V., C. Huber, F. Cooke, N. Pudar, J. Smith and M. Paich (2002). 
"A Multimethod Approach for Creating New Business Models: The General 
Motors OnStar Project." Interfaces 32(1): 20-34.

and (tangentially anyway) in the HBS case:  OnStar: Not your Father's GM 
(#9-602-081)

there is also a video on the modeling project available from INFORMS 
(http://www.informs.org/site/edelman_dvd/) since the project was a 
finalist in the Edelman competition.
