REPLY Age of material in a stock (SD6415)

There has been much discussion recently about the proper way 
to evaluate age of items in a stock.

But there has been no discussion of why the answer matters.  
Can someone supply some examples of where the way of computing 
age in a stock will alter the direction of policy 
recommendations to improve the behavior of a system?
