Proposed Student Chapter of the System Dynamics Society

PhD Students Theo van Mullekom , ÷zge Pala and EtiŽnne Rouwette

The students of SD met during the ISDC 2000 in Bergen and decided to apply for the formal status of a student chapter of the System Dynamics Society. The aim of this chapter will be to intensify the communication between and form a basis for cooperation amongst the graduate students in their research projects, to arouse interest among undergraduate students towards system dynamics, to promote the communication both amongst the students and between the students of SD and seniors in the field, and to form a medium to help SD students to get into contact with field-related graduate studies and job opportunities. The first activity of the students was to organize the first SD PhD Colloquium in Bergen before the conference. There were 8 presentations by PhD students from different universities around the world. A number of experts in the field attended and commented on the work presented. The aim of the PhD Colloquium was to give prospective PhD's a chance to present their research proposals to an audience of experienced academics, in order to get feedback and learn how to overcome problems in their research. Since this first colloquium was perceived to be successful, a second SD PhD colloquium will be organized before the Atlanta conference in 2001. Since the students are dispersed around the world, they are using the Internet as the communication medium. They have a web-communication site, Luvit, licensed through Lund University. At the moment, the group has three task groups and is working toward getting the chapter application ready. If you are interested in joining them in forming a mechanism for bringing students interested in SD together, please contact ÷zge Pala at The webpage can be visited at
