The System Dynamics Winter Camp: Austin, Texas - January 6 and 7, 2000

The first "System Dynamics Winter Camp" brought together fifty of the foremost researchers and practitioners in system dynamics under the auspices of the University of Texas Department of Management and the University of Texas Enterprise Simulation Group. The camp provided a forum for a more open-ended interchange of ideas and cutting-edge techniques than is typically possible at the much larger summer International System Dynamics Conference.

Program topics and presenters included: Organizational Models and Model Building (Roger Hall, Jac Vennix, Anjali Sastry), Technology and Product Development (David Ford/John Sterman, Nitin Joglekar, Ed Anderson/Geoff Parker), Service Operations (Rogelio Oliva, Robert Kallenberg, Sheldon Friedman/Michael Radzicki), Policy Modeling (George Richardson, Nate Osgood, Ann van Ackere), Dynamics of Urban Planning (Andrew Ford, Drew Jones/Don Seville, Steen Rasmussen), New Directions in System Dynamics (Marshall van Alstyne, Christian Kampmann, Jack Homer), Student Presentations (Etienne Rouwette, James Ritchie-Dunham, Scott Rockart, Mila Getmansky, Oleg Pavlov, Paulo Goncalves, Laura Black, Brad Morrison). There was also a large contingent of practitioners participating in the Camp including representatives from Arthur Andersen, Ford Motor Company, Harley-Davidson, Los Alamos National Laboratory, McKinsey, and Powersim Corporation.

The diversity of the presentations encouraged an atmosphere of cross-fertilization and stimulated many interesting discussions. This was facilitated by the open-ended format of the camp with forty-five minute presentations followed by a half-hour discussion after each panel of presenters. Overall, the Camp was judged by most participants to be quite a success.

Many thanks go to the sponsors of the Camp for making it all possible: Arthur Andersen LLP, McKinsey and Company, PA Pugh-Roberts Associates, and SDSG LLP (the Strategic Decision Simulation Group) and of course to Ed Anderson who organized the first System Dynamics Winter Camp!
