Complexio is currently involved in several research projects using System Dynamics. We are responsible for the coordination of one large project that started this year. This project is funded by public institutes including the French National Institute for Transport and Safety Research (INRETS) and the French Ministry of Ecology. It is directly linked to a previous project called TEOL that was completed in 2008, and deals with recent logistical trends and environmental issues. It follows another large research project using system dynamics also coordinated by Complexio and completed at the end of 2009. “Carbone-Fret” (Carbon-Freight) was a project funded by the French Environment and Energy Management Agency (ADEME) under the French programme of research, experimentation and innovation in land transport (PREDIT); it was carried out in collaboration with the French National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS). Scenarios using System Dynamics modelling were developed in order to assess the possible impacts of different levels of taxes and carbon emissions trading on freight transport traffics and pollutant emissions. Complexio is also involved in European consortia, and more especially in research projects for which System Dynamics will be used. Valerie Gacogne was asked to write two chapters for two French books dealing with computer simulation models, those chapters feature system dynamics models developed by Complexio:
Decision Dynamics, Inc.Since its incorporation in 1979, Decision Dynamics, Inc. (DDI) has been providing satisfied government and commercial clients with the information they need to support effective decision-making. DDI builds and employs sophisticated simulation modeling tools that quantify the complex cost, performance and schedule tradeoffs among competing “what-if?” scenarios. One of these tools, “FleetSight,” utilizes advanced proprietary techniques to bring the capabilities of system dynamics (SD) to the program analysis world. FleetSight, a program cost and analysis decision tool, replicates the causal logic of real-world relationships and captures a wealth of data, both hard and soft. FleetSight users define “what-if?” scenarios to include alternative management decisions, alternative assumptions about system relationships and/or alternative data points from different sources. Unique to FleetSight is an analytical structure that allows for analysis of equipment impacts, such as availability, and cost projections, to be explored in a single, unified analytical context, along with the non-material alternatives that must be addressed. Key capabilities resulting from the system dynamics foundation are unique methodologies to address the impact of aging, use/abuse, and changes to mission environment or profile. DDI currently supports a variety of programs within the Naval Air Systems Command through a 10-seat installed base within AIR 4.4, Power and Propulsion Engineering. FleetSight is U.S. Navy NMCI “certified” and has undergone validation and verification (V&V) by both NAVSEA and NAVAIR. It is also USAF “Standard Desktop Compliant (SDC)” certified. Other clients have included United Defense, Lockheed Martin, and Northrop Grumman, the USCG, Agusta-Bell, the U.S. Air Force, the Transportation Security Agency and U.S. Customs and Border Protection. DDI is using FleetSight as a tool in conducting a sustainment analysis supporting the U.S. Customs and Border Protection aircraft inventory.
Another NWO PhD research grant –for exploring financial systems under extreme conditions and deep uncertainty– is expected to be granted too. This additional PhD position is planned to strengthen their research programme on “Exploratory System Dynamics Modeling and Analysis” (ESDMA). ESDMA consists of the combination of System Dynamics and Exploratory Modeling and Analysis (EMA) and can be used to analyze dynamic complexity and explore policy robustness in case of complex issues characterized by deep uncertainty. Some of our researchers are currently applying this multi-method to issues of increasing methodological complexity and are developing algorithms to make the multi-method useful for real-world decision making under deep uncertainty. This research programme will soon be cross-fertilized with in-house expertise on Formal Modeling and Data Mining. Four papers from the ESDMA research programme will be presented at the upcoming System Dynamics Conference in Seoul. There is organizational news too: System Dynamicists from TU Delft and Radboud University Nijmegen have taken the initiative to start a Dutch Chapter of the System Dynamics Society. The size of the System Dynamics field in the Netherlands makes a more formal organization indispensible. Although the Netherlands is a small country, there are many Dutch System Dynamics practitioners, studies, projects, courses, and students. For example, in Delft alone, more than 200 students enroll each year for the introductory SD courses, more than 130 for the SD project courses, more than 20 for the advanced SD courses, and about 20 SD MSc or BSc theses are completed each year. New ‘hot’ teaching and testing cases for introductory/intermediate System Dynamics courses have become available too: all hot cases will soon be bundled into a new System Dynamics Exercises Book. For further information on these topics, please contact Erik Pruyt (E.Pruyt@tudelft.nl).

Visitors from Nijmegen, under the painting by David C. Lithgow depicting the Dutch ship “Halfmoon” sailing on the Hudson River - From Left: Karl Rethemeyer, Roberta Spencer, Thom de Graaf, Sebastian Kortmann, Marian Janssen, David Andersen, Wijnand Kok
Earlier this year in March, the System Dynamics Society collaborated with the City of Albany and the University at Albany to host a group of
distinguished visitors from The Netherlands, most notably Dr. Sebastian
Kortmann, the Rector Magnificus of Radboud University and Thom de Graaf,
the Mayor of the City of Nijmegen. The visit was timed to coincide with
the 400th anniversary of Henry Hudson's historic voyage up the Hudson
River to Albany. Nijmegen has had a sister-city relationship with Albany
for 65 years.
The delegation's schedule, while in Albany, included the opportunity to
dialogue with University at Albany President George Philip, City of Albany
Mayor Gerald Jennings, and System Dynamics Society Executive Director
Roberta Spencer as well as several members of the faculty at University at
Albany. Radboud University is one of four European institutions that
initiated the European Master Programme in System Dynamics this year.
The 10th conference of the European Academy of Management (EURAM 2010) was held in Rome from May 19th to May 22nd. The System Dynamics Italian Chapter, in collaboration with Stefano Armenia, Edoardo Mollona and Professor Meneguzzo (Tor Vergata University, Faculty of Economics), promoted the use of system dynamics methodology. Many of the usual System Dynamics Society conference attendees were also present (among them: Gianluca Colombo, Martin Kunc, Brian Dangerfield, Kim Warren, Stefan Groesser, and Habib Sedehi).
Two specific tracks on applications of systems thinking and system dynamics to management topics were presented.
There was also an additional special session organized at the EURAM venue by the SYDIC and the Public Management Group of Professor Marco Meneguzzo. The workshop consisted of a presentation of the system dynamics and systems thinking disciplines to Italian institutional stakeholders (mainly Public Administration), in order to promote the system dynamics methodology by presenting some national and international best practice/applications in the fields of economics, sustainable development, environment, health, public management. A roundtable with institutional stakeholders followed, where the impact of new analysis methods and the space for application of the system dynamics methodology to public policy testing and decision making in highly dynamic and complex environments was discussed. There were additional important contributions from academics, professionals and members of research associations. Free materials were distributed during this workshop and are available on the website of the Italian Chapter.
During the roundtable session, two EU-funded projects (7th Framework Programme) were presented.
Overall, it was a great success. All sessions were well attended and the system dynamics methodology raised the interest of many attendees, researchers, professionals and academics. With such a good outcome (which may improve in terms of submitted papers), we would like to demonstrate to the system dynamics community that in future EURAM conferences, system dynamics will have a larger presence. We also hope that our success will contribute to the diffusion of system dynamics. There will be more detailed information on the tracks, the sessions and the presented papers to come-stay tuned!)

Call for Papers - International Journal of Information Technologies and Systems Approach (IJITSA)
Submission Due Date: September 30, 2010
Special Issue on: System Dynamics and other Simulation-Based Approaches for Information Systems
Guest Editors
Dr. Peter Otto, Union Graduate College, USA
Dr. Andrej Skraba, University of Maribor, Slovenia
Introduction
IS research aims to help decision-makers understand and anticipate opportunities to deploy IS and adding business value for organizations in today’s competitive environment. Decisions concerning IS are complex and challenging for a decision-maker; time pressure, incomplete information, unknown feedback loops, organizational contexts, and selfish motivations strongly influence such decisions. Inadequate decisions and subsequent actions might lead to undesired results. Enhancing the knowledge of gaining business value from IS is possible by achieving insights into the complex behavior of the system and the interaction among decision variables. Using simulation models permit the testing of various assumptions and provide decision-makers with the ability to explore the consequences of various scenarios and alternative functional relationships among variables in the system.
Objective of the Special Issue
It is important to gain a broader, systemic view on the management and control problems in the fields of systems engineering, software engineering and information systems. This would contribute to better understanding of underlying system structure, dynamics and possibilities for efficient control. Papers in the special issue should therefore address practical application of system dynamics and other simulation-based approaches in the field of Information Systems to improve understanding of business structures and decision making. Methodological papers as well as case studies are welcome.
