26th International Conference of the System Dynamics Society, Athens, Greece July 20 - 24, 2008

Hosted by the Hellenic Chapter of the System Dynamics Society

Preliminary Conference Information: Call for Papers, Presentations, Workshops and Sessions

"True wisdom comes to each of us when we realize how little we understand about life, ourselves, and the world around us.” ~ Socrates

The 2008 conference will be staged in the cradle of Western civilization. Athens is one of the oldest cities in the world and the birthplace of Socrates who some say was one of the first systems thinkers! The venue will be The Athenaeum InterContinental hotel, located on the edge of downtown Athens with excellent views of the Acropolis and Mount Lycabetus. It is one of the most prominent hotels in Athens with a significant history of hosting conferences. For detailed information visit www.intercontinental.com/athens

Program

The conference program will consist of invited and contributed sessions and workshops demonstrating the state of the art in the theory and application of system dynamics. In addition, panel discussions, special interest group sessions, student colloquia, the modeling assistance workshop, vendor displays, exhibits, demonstrations, Society business meetings and other related activities will be scheduled. The location and the conference schedule will provide time for relaxed social and professional interaction. The conference will bring together diverse perspectives on the application of system dynamics to important issues in the theory of complex dynamic systems and the practical use of these tools to address critical real-world challenges.

New Activity for Business SIG

Due to growing interest there has been established a new discussion group: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/SDS_SIG_Business

The aim of the group is to provide a platform where system dynamicists - academics and practioneers - can exchange their knowledge on how to connect the business world - respectively people - to the system dynamics methodology in order to make better decisions. It also shall be the incubator for SIG Business sessions at future SDS Conferences. Looking forward to your participation and active discussion.

Call for Interest in the Formation of a New SIG or Chapter on Participatory Methods and Issues

In light of the observed and sustained interest on participatory methods, described and illustrated in my full report on a number of sessions, I would like to propose the formation of a new Special Interest Group or Chapter focused upon this line of research. Informally, at the Boston Conference, I began to seek out reactions to this proposal and my sense is that they were, in general, positive and supportive.

The preliminary steps to the formation of such SIG or Chapter are: 1) identification of the Society members interested, 2) discussion of our collective purpose and goals, form of organization (SIG vs. Chapter), and initial activities, 3) preparation of our charter and collection of signatures of support, and 4) submission to the SDS-PC for approval.

Some of the initial activities could entail: a) creating and maintaining a comprehensive annotated bibliography, b) highlighting the major milestones and existing works, and c) promoting opportunities for communication and exchange.

I am offering to facilitate the process of forming this new SIG or Chapter. If this is of interest to you, please let me know so that you can be included in the upcoming discussion related to purpose, goals, charter, and initial activities. Please drop me a note with your input at aazagon@sandia.gov. Thank you.

Call for Interest in Society Governance

In order to attract candidates interested in serving, and to attract candidates who might be outside the professional networks of current PC members, the Society is proactively asking members to declare their interest in serving. If you are interested in, or know someone who is interested in, serving as a volunteer on the Policy Council, a Society officer or an Assistant Vice President, please fill out the Notification of Interest in Society Governance form and send it to the Nominating Committee for consideration.
