Now, approaching the 50th year since initial work that led to system dynamics, we can look back on a half century of accomplishment and from that perspective consider the next 50 years.  In five decades, system dynamics has made excellent progress and is moving at a rate comparable to the early histories of other major professions. However, this progress represents only the first tentative steps toward a mature profession of social system design.

Some have expressed disappointment at what appears to be the slow progress in evolution of system dynamics. On the other hand, the field is moving at least as fast as have other professions. It is now 150 years since the founding of MIT; and engineering education is still unfolding. Some 125 years ago the Johns Hopkins medical school was founded; and medicine is still feeling its way. The Harvard Business School started about 100 years ago, and management education departments are still more like trade schools than true professional schools. It is time to start thinking about the next 50 or 100 years in the development of system dynamics.

The other professions, such as engineering and medicine, depend on educational programs as much as eight years in duration for advanced practice. In system dynamics, all education is still at the introductory level, whether in K-12 schools, undergraduate programs, or graduate schools. Nowhere is there a system dynamics education that builds cumulatively over even two years, to say nothing of eight years. Yet, it is clear that such depth is possible and needed, and will evolve. Until an extended education is available, the practitioners in business and government will lack the basis for appropriate system design. We also have an opportunity to provide a dynamic foundation under many other fields including medicine, political science, economics, and international relations.

Ideas for deeper insights and more powerful and extended educational programs exist close to the surface and are available for uncovering and development. Why do we not see more movement? Perhaps it is because the elementary understanding of systems developed in the last 50 years is so useful that people assume that is all there is to accomplish. Such is far from the goal. >We do not yet see emerging a stream of powerful, insightful, provocative, and publicly influential books on dynamics of subjects like inflation, social welfare, balance of trade, immigration, preemptive military intervention, epidemics, deficits, aid to developing countries, population growth, pollution, drug abuse, and medical costs.

After 50 years, the promise and vision for widespread understanding of systems is taking shape. The next 50 years should be devoted to bringing that vision to reality.

Packed boxes ready for the moveDear Members:

The Moving Sale And The Move: Thanks to everyone who participated in our one-time moving sale. During the months of March and April 2006 we sold 899 past issues of the System Dynamics Review and 181 past conference proceedings. We emptied close to 28 linear feet of shelf space that will not have to be moved again in September!

In preparation for the office renovation this summer, recently we spent some hours packing our desks and files, boxing the beer game supplies and all the printed materials. We had professional movers, but we still had a lot of work to do. Luckily, we were able to move our computers and files into the temporary office space the day before the big move, strategically avoiding the serious bottleneck at the one elevator in the building on Monday -- moving day. We were up and running by lunchtime. We will be on the second floor (instead of the third) in the same building for the summer. All our contact information remains the same during this time.

During the pre-move preparation time, significant amounts of bits and pieces, large and small, that had been stockpiled for years in all the third-floor offices started to appear in bins placed in the hallway! The hallway turned into a maze and a centralized source for all kinds of office supplies (although dusty, a bit out of date, and mostly metal instead of plastic), computer and phone cables, and other great finds. I have to admit I poked through my neighbors’ trash -- I needed a longer phone cable for the new space and found one in a junk bin.

All things considered, the move went very well; we have a great staff and everyone “chipped in.” We’ll be moving back again in September, so, if you have any boxes …

Past Conference Proceedings: A long-term project we are working on is to get all past conference proceedings on the web as open source material. As Jim Thompson, Policy Council Member, commented, “Proceedings are very important to scholarly research since they can be mined for the progression in the development of an idea.”


Paper copies of all the proceedings are archived in the Society office. The Istanbul conference in 1997 was the first time papers were included on a CD-ROM, and we’ve had electronic versions ever since. Conference proceedings from 1997 to 2005 are currently available on the Society Activities page, on the Society website.


Work-study students here at the University at Albany are manually entering titles and abstracts from the 1996 conference into a spreadsheet. Once this is complete, the tedious work of scanning the pages of the proceedings will be undertaken. With all the steps complete, we will link the titles to the scanned papers. The list of the titles and the abstracts will be searchable, although the scanned documents will not. We will continue this project until all the past proceedings are done and on the web! Do you remember all the conferences before 1997?

Request for News

Our plan to publish four issues of the System Dynamics Newsletter every year continues with this, the second issue of this year. Please send us your letters, news, photographs, and ideas to be included in one of the newsletters! Additionally, if you would like to contribute an article of interest to our community, please send your suggestion to the Society office.

All past newsletters, back to 1988, are available on the Society website under “Publications.” The recently added “Society Status Report of 1983-84,” and the conference keynote address of 1983 by Jay W. Forrester, capture some of our history.

Call for Photos (and other bits of history)

The 2007 conference will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the founding of the field. We are looking for historical event photos, documents of historic significance, any kind of artifact of interest to display at the 2007 conference.

Were you at the bullfight in Seville? Did you play soccer in 1981 in Rensselaerville? Do you have any photos, documents, or articles, or stories of notable events, conference or otherwise? There have been many remarkable occasions during the past fifty years, some momentous and some amusing. We are hoping that folks who have these bits of history will share them. If you have an item that could be copied and displayed at the 2007 conference, please send it to the Society office. Items may be in electronic form or hard copy. Appointments, Promotions and Awards

David F. Ford has received tenure with promotion to Associate Professor from Texas A&M University, located in College Station, Texas. David teaches system dynamics courses within the Department of Civil Engineering. His promotion will become effective September 1, 2006.


Associate Professor Rogelio Oliva has also received tenure at Texas A&M University. Rogelio is affiliated with the Mays Business School where he teaches in the MBA and Executive MBA programs.


Corey Lofdahl changed jobs last September and now works for the Intelligent Systems Division at BAE Systems in Burlington, Massachusetts where he does simulation-based foreign policy research for the U.S. government.

Bruce Szelest, Assistant Vice President for Strategic Planning and Assessment at the University at Albany of the State University of New York, has now taken on the leadership of the University's Office of Institutional Research, Planning and Effectiveness (IRPE).  Bruce began his professional career at the University at Albany in 1987 in the Office of the Provost, and then spent fourteen years in Institutional Research prior to returning to the Provost's Office in 2004.  Working under the supervision of George Richardson at the University at Albany and Fred Volkwein of the Pennsylvania State University's Center for the Study of Higher Education, Bruce received his PhD in System Dynamics from UAlbany in 2003.


New Professional Degree Program at Worcester Polytechnic Institute

Khalid Saeed is happy to announce that WPI has added a new professional degree program, leading to a Master of Science in System Dynamics, to its range of offerings in system dynamics. This program requires completion of 30 credits, at least 21 of which must be in system dynamics. The remaining credit can be earned by doing additional work either in system dynamics or in a selection from recommended courses in mathematics/organizational studies/economics/management. This new program can be pursued entirely online through WPI's Advanced Distance Learning System.

 

In addition to a unique bachelor's degree in system dynamics, the Social Science and Policy Studies Department offers an  extensive  graduate curriculum in system dynamics, which can be  pursued  independently or combined with a WPI undergraduate degree program for work towards a 5-year bachelors/masters degree. WPI's graduate courses are also offered online for those who may wish to pursue them either individually or as a part of a graduate degree or certificate. The following system dynamics programs are now offered.

In Memorium - Nathaniel J. Mass

Nathaniel J. Mass, of Manhattan, died of cancer on April 23, 2006. He led his own investment banking and strategic growth advisory firm, Nathaniel J. Mass Associates, and was a Senior Fellow with Katzenbach Partners, LLC. Formerly he served as Senior Vice President of Strategic Growth for GenCorp, and was a partner with McKinsey and Company. Dr. Mass also was Director of Worldwide Strategic Planning for Exxon Chemical Company. He began his career as an Associate Professor at the MIT Sloan School of Management. He held B.S. and Ph.D. degrees from MIT.

Chinese Chapter - Reflections on Organizational Learning (from Dr. Bing Wu, Chinese Chapter Representative)

On April 13th, 2006, Tongji University successfully hosted “Reflections and Discussions on Continuous Organizational Learning, Innovation, and Sustainable Social Development.”

This event was initiated by the Society for Organizational Learning (SoL) and executed by the China Chapter of the System Dynamics Society, the System Dynamics committee of the Systems Engineering Society of China, and Tongji Development Institute, Tongji University. It was sponsored by the All-China Federation of Trade Unions, School of Economics and Management, Tongji University, Shanghai National Accounting Institute, China Executive Leadership Academy (Pudong), the Enterprise Resource Management Research Center (AMT), Shanghai Mingde Learning Organization Research Institute, the China Business News, Wenhui Daily, the National Business Daily, Business Review (International Consulting Information) and more. The event was presided over by Dr. Bingcheng Wu, Representative of the China Chapter of the System Dynamics Society, Vice-Standing-Director of the System Dynamics committee of the Systems Engineering Society of China, and Vice-Dean of Tongji Development Institute.

The Society for Organizational Learning and Dr. Peter Senge emphasize that sustainable development can only go forward with reflections, because there is no ready answer to sustainable development in this unsustainable complex reality. Individual reflections, community reflections, and especially open group reflections with cross-cultural interactions will be requested in the future. Actually, reflections have been the core content of the traditional Chinese culture that contains individual and group learning, practice and tutelage. In recent years, both international and domestic experiences have already proven that without deep social reflections, the construction of sustainable development and the harmonious society cannot achieve substantive progress. Only the establishment of in-depth reflection and dialogue can help all stakeholders to achieve consensus and to form sustainable leadership in order to facilitate cooperation. The commencement is to gather the educational world, the business community, and the minority leaders of government and non-government institutions to form a common vision, expand a sympathetic chord and enhance coordination.

In order to make a contribution to creating a mature, harmonious and sustainable industry and commerce culture, the Society for Organizational Learning and the China Chapter of the System Dynamics Society sponsored this dialogue. The dialogue takes enterprise sustainable development leadership as a key point, and continues to impel enterprise leadership improvement in China by establishing a mechanism of multi-organization and humanities culture supporting the industry and commerce domain through official regulation, leaders attendance and the interaction way. The Society for Organizational Learning and the China Chapter of the System Dynamics Society hope to promote the comprehensive harmony of society and ecological system. Through this activity and a series of in-depth learning activities, the long-enduring impetus in the future is not merely "the reduction of environmental pollution" or "reduced unsustainablity." Therefore, the emphasized humanities and the society "environment" education is not only the tool for enterprise to improve its performance but also the goal. This goal is to construct "the circulation economy" for the benefit of both human beings and the nature.

The method of in-depth study is to combine those that historically proved true and those essences in traditional Chinese related to study and human development into the process of constructing the system thinking and teaching. Regarding human development and practice, there exist advanced theory and practice methods inherited from the past. Through cooperative research between tradition and the modern age, China and the world can construct a smooth and thorough communication bridge. A new Trans-Culture coordination and creativity will be formed.

Professor Qifan Wang, Fudan and Tongji Universities, President Elect of the International System Dynamics Society, President of China Chapter, President of Shanghai Association of MIT alumni, Director of Professional Committee of System Dynamics and the Systems Engineering Society of China, Dean of Tongji Development Institute, Tongji University, attended this conference. The conference also invited Prof. Kouqing Li, Vice-President of Shanghai National Accounting Institute, Deputy Secretary-General of APEC Finance and Development Program, Deputy Secretary of SNAI's Party Committee, also Deputy Director of Shanghai Serves of Economical Research Board; Prof. Jieren Xi, Deputy Vice-President of China Executive Leadership Academy (Pudong), Vice-President (concurrently) of Shanghai Social Science Association, President of Shanghai Leadership Science Association, expert in National Social Sciences Fund Project Discipline Appraisal Group; Dr. Qi Jin, the CEO (chief executive officer) of Anji-TNT Auto Logistic Limited Company; and other guests. We obtained support from the All-China Federation of Trade Unions, School of Economics and Management, Tongji University, Shanghai National Accounting Institute, China Executive Leadership Academy (Pudong) and the China Business News. Media coming to the scene to report included the China Business News, Wenhui Daily, the National Business Daily, Business Review (International Consulting Information), Xinmin Weekly (Wenhui-Xinmin United Press Group) and other authoritative and specialized media.

In his closing speech, Prof. Qifan Wang reviewed the previous discussions and two social events (including this one) that the Society, himself and Dr. Peter Senge have held about how to carry out the learning organization construction and impetus of sustainable development in China. At the same time, Prof. Wang also explicitly expressed the wish that the China Chapter of the System Dynamics Society and himself could establish the long-term cooperation requested from the International Organization Society and Dr. Peter Senge.

Updated Demo Dozen Models Available

A free updated version of Demo Dozen is now available for downloading from the CIESD web site (http://www.ciesd.org/influence/demo_dozen.shtml).

Demo Dozen consists of thirteen STELLA (isee systems, inc.) simulations that offer enjoyable and challenging “hands-on” opportunities to address significant questions and manage a diverse range of “real world” systems (biological, economic, historical, & social).

CIESD’s web-site (www.CIESD.org) also offers a wide variety of other explanatory, training, and curricular system dynamics materials.

Job specifications for System Dynamics Bibliographer

After seven years, our bibliographer Jennifer Ferris has retired. Many thanks to her and we wish her good luck!

Purpose of project: To update the System Dynamics bibliography for publication at least twice each year.

Current salary: $10.00/hour -- (approximately 35 hours per year)

Tasks
·    To communicate with Roberta Spencer, Executive Director of the System Dynamics Society, on a regular basis as the bibliography is updated.
·    To input all of the System Dynamics Review articles, International System Dynamics Conference proceedings and corresponding references since the last update of the bibliography.
·    To input appropriate* Society members' publications.
·    To solicit and research additional entries for articles, monographs and dissertations from the system dynamics community, appropriate websites and online database searches.
·    To maintain the integrity of the bibliography through periodic audits of author names and duplicate entries.
·    To create regular reports concerning the progress of the updating procedure, including statistics of the number of updates by type and source
·    To produce a public, updated bibliography in text, tab delimited and Endnote formats to be posted on the Internet and produced in hard copy.

Attention to detail, proficiency in searching the Internet and online databases; strong data entry skills in a Windows environment; ability to meet deadlines; computer access; organizational skills

CALL FOR PAPERS
Special Issue of the System Dynamics Review celebrating the 50th anniversary of the field

The field of system dynamics was founded by Jay Forrester 50 years ago.  The 2007 conference of the System Dynamics Society will celebrate this milestone and, in conjunction, the System Dynamics Review will publish a special double issue (2 & 3) commemorating this achievement.  The special issue will consist of a mix of invited and contributed papers, and will both look back at our rich history and look forward to the next 50 years.  We particularly welcome papers and notes that review or synthesize important theoretical issues, application areas, modeling practice, comparative methodological issues, and educational developments.  We also encourage descriptions of exemplary applications and other developments that explore important paths for the future development of the field.

The issue will be edited by John Sterman with the assistance of a diverse group of guest associate editors:  Yaman Barlas, Bob Cavana, Pål Davidsen, Andy Ford, Peter Milling, John Morecroft, Nelson Repenning, George Richardson, Krystyna Stave, Linda Booth Sweeney, and Jac Vennix.

Papers should follow the journal's Guidelines for main articles and other categories of contribution.  They are subject to the normal refereeing procedures of the journal.  Inquiries about proposed papers are welcome; the guest editors will provide feedback on proposals. A two-stage procedure is to be adopted. Initially authors are requested to submit an extended abstract (two pages maximum). These will then be reviewed by the editors and selected authors will be invited to submit a full, Notes & Insights or Research Problems paper. Inquiries and extended abstracts should be directed to:

Location
Nijmegen is the Netherlands' oldest city and celebrated its 2000th anniversary in 2005. The city offers historic sites and museums and borders beautiful forest countryside and polder landscapes, the unique low-lying terrains that have been reclaimed from water and are protected by dikes.

 

Venue  
Conference meetings will be held at the campus of Radboud University in auditoria and parallel rooms. For coffee breaks and lunches the university restaurant and open-air bar are available. A range of accommodations, from a luxury spa hotel to bed & breakfasts and economical hostels, is available within walking distance or up to a 15-minute bus (or bike!) ride depending on the location. Nijmegen is a small, friendly city and very easy to navigate. Nijmegen can be easily reached from Amsterdam Schiphol Airport by a 1.5 hour scenic train ride. There is also a Nijmegen "Survival Guide" with much local information. *NEW: Recently Radboud University has made available to our conference participants some "guesthouse" rooms. Mostly, these are ONE-person apartments available as of Saturday July 22nd for seven nights. The price (including linens and cleaning) is approximately 280 Euros. The entire week must be paid for; they will not rent the apartment for less than one week even if you do not need accommodations for a full week. Breakfast is not included. The apartments are within a short walk of the conference venue.

Program
The conference will bring together people from all over the globe working in system dynamics and systems thinking. Presentations by practitioners and world leaders in the field will cover a wide variety of topics.

The theme of the conference is "The dynamics of innovation in networks." Successful innovation requires enthusiasm and commitment from all parties involved. In complex issues that extend beyond the boundaries of a single organization, the network of stakeholders can be extensive. System dynamics in the Netherlands often takes the form of group model building. Academics and consultants alike choose to apply modeling in innovative projects on novel, complex issues that extend beyond the boundaries of single entities, reaching out to other individuals, groups or organizations. True to the spirit of system dynamics, group model building aims to capture the whole system, by involving all relevant constituencies and stakeholders in model construction. The theme of the conference reflects this involvement of multiple parties in making innovation work.

PhD Colloquium at Nijmegen

Dear students, faculty and all other practitioners,

At the 24th International Conference of the System Dynamics Society in Nijmegen, the 7th PhD Colloquium will take place as a whole-day event Sunday the 23rd July 2006.

The objective of the Colloquium is to bring together PhD students working on foundations, techniques, tools, and applications to system dynamics and give them the opportunity to present and discuss their research in a constructive and international atmosphere. The setting allows for common problems encountered by PhD researchers using system dynamics to be identified and discussed in more depth during dedicated workshops, thus providing a unique opportunity for learning among all attendants.

The participation of experienced faculty, practitioners, and others in the wider system dynamics community is a vital element for the colloquium to fulfill its objective and to provide a constructive and diverse atmosphere to the students.We warmly invite PhD students in the early to middle stages of their research to present their research proposal at the PhD colloquium. If you are interested in receiving feedback during this event from the senior researchers in our field, as well as from peers, please use the indications on the submission page of the PhD Colloquium website. Even if you are not presenting your work, you are more than welcome to join us for the whole day. The PhD Colloquium is a great event for meeting peers and exchanging ideas; please join us.

The format will accommodate about eight diverse plenary student presentations that have a clear research question and well defined open issues for discussion during dedicated workshops. Depending on the number of submitted proposals there may be a poster session in order to give all the students who submitted a paper the chance to present their work and get feedback.

Modeling Assistance Workshop

Jack Homer and Roderick MacDonald will facilitate the Sixth Annual Modeling Assistance Workshop.

Modeling assistance is available at the conference to enable modelers to discuss their specific modeling questions with modeling coaches. Modeling assistance opportunities include two public workshops, as well as the possibility of assistance at any time during the conference. Assistance is available for modelers with all levels of modeling ability, from beginner to advanced, with questions about a specific model that modelers are developing or studying, or to better understand something in a book, an article, or a software package. Modeling questions may deal with problem articulation, formulation of a dynamic hypothesis, formulation of a simulation model, model testing, or policy design and evaluation. Modelers should bring whatever materials they need to describe their question, including pencil and paper, books, posters, or laptop computers. Spectators are welcome to observe modeling assistance during the two public sessions.

Decision Dynamics, Inc.

Since its incorporation in 1979, Decision Dynamics, Inc. Evans and Peck

Evans & Peck has been providing decision modelling advice to its clients for over 20 years.  We currently operate in Australia, New Zealand, China, Hong Kong and Singapore and are one of the few modelling consultancies that are positioned to provide localised support to firms throughout the Asia Pacific region.

 

In February this year the Sydney office hosted the annual Australian and New Zealand System Dynamics Research Colloquium.  This event was attended by a wide range of SD modellers from both research and consulting backgrounds.

 

Our new website www.decisionmodelling.com was launched in March 2006. This website provides information and examples of our entire modelling capability including system dynamics, discrete event and agent based.

 

In May 2006 the Evans & Peck Sydney Office hosted the first Australian based AnyLogic training session.  This much anticipated session booked out very early and all that attended were treated to three days of intensive instruction in the new AnyLogic software and how it deals with various modelling scenarios.  We are currently investigating the possibility of running a second course later in the year.

 

Most recently the Evans & Peck Hong Kong Office, in conjunction with isee systems and Lexidyne, ran a three-day introduction to STELLA and iThink Course.  The course was widely attended, with delegates from South Africa, Singapore, Malaysia, Australia and China.  Given the success of this course it is intended to run an additional course in Singapore in early September.

General Motors Corporation

Led by Dan Roesch, GM Strategic Initiatives (GMSI) is a staff of General Motors Corporation responsible for analyzing major strategic initiatives for the company.  Within GMSI, Phil Keenan leads the development of detailed quantitative models of the automotive industry or specific aspects of it, in order to more accurately assess the likely impact of potential new strategies.  Many of these are system dynamics and/or agent-based simulation models developed with the help of consultants Mark Paich and Lyle Wallis of Decisio LLP.

 

One recent project included building a management flight simulator.  Building on Vensim’s gaming interface capability, we developed a multi-player game in which senior executives played the roles of GM and key competitors during a future new product launch.  The real-time competitive nature of the gaming interface engaged the executives’ emotions and the power of the experiential learning led to important changes in GM’s real-life strategy.

 

We also developed an agent-based simulation of interacting consumers purchasing vehicles, calibrated with demographic and historical purchase data.  This combination of system dynamics with agent-based simulation seems promising because it enables modeling a wider array of behaviors, such as non-compensatory consumer choice.


Global Strategy Dynamics

GSD creates teaching materials and games to facilitate learning of strategic management for improving business performance.

 

Our Chairman, Kim Warren, was awarded the prestigious Forrester prize in 2005 for his book "Competitive Strategy Dynamics". This is the approach that underlies all our materials and business simulations and we are continuing to build on these sound foundations as we expand our range of products.

Master Systems Inc.

Master Systems Inc. (http://www.Master-Systems.com) is an advisory services firm in its 21st year. We focus on improving the processes by which software is developed and managed. One of our principals, Stan Rifkin, completed his doctoral dissertation by writing the first simulation ever of Talcott Parsons' theory of action. Parsons was perhaps the best known American sociologist of the 20th Century.

 

What makes the simulation interesting to the system dynamics community is that it did not use system dynamics! Other famous and successful researchers had tried to use SD to model the theory of action and failed. Dr. Rifkin adopted discrete-event simulation instead and that worked; he used the organization as the unit of analysis, so the simulation enacts the way Parsons would describe action and change at the organizational level. These are exiting times in The Netherlands. System dynamics and systems thinking are more and more recognized as valuable tools for managing in today's dynamic and complex business environments.  More projects, more initiatives and more research questions. In the meantime we are busy with the Dutch system dynamics community  to make the 2006 System Dynamics Conference a success.

 

We are looking to set up a Industrial Dynamics SIG in the Netherlands and are interested to discuss this during the business day of the coming conference in Nijmegen to tap in with international initiatives (if you are interested in this subject please contact Wiebe Cnossen (wiebe@minase.nl).

 

From the project front we will give the spotlight  to a project we have carried out in the pharmaceutical world:

 

For a global company a large system dynamics model was made of the primary production and planning processes. Production processes were split into two parts: a customer-order driven part (packaging process) and a forecast-driven part (production process).

In the first phase of the modeling project a causal loop diagram was made of all logistic parameters and how they influence each other. In the second phase, the causal loop diagram was translated into a quantitative system dynamics model. With this model it is possible to simulate the effects of certain policies or business cases in a quantitative (and financial) way. Hereby it is possible to evaluate and support possible policy decisions. For example, what are the effects of shortening the production lead times: Are stocks decreasing? Do we need more or less employees? Will our delivery performance improve or deteriorate? And what will be the integral costs of this measure?

 

At this moment, the model is validated. The next step is to let stakeholders play with the model and let them run scenarios and discuss about the results of the scenarios, so learning and knowledge sharing will take place.

 

In our academic collaboration we are looking together with Tilburg University to set up a lab (Tiresias) focusing on supply network dynamics with emphasize on high-tech industries, pharmaceuticals and telecom. The seven waves of supply network dynamics as presented during the Oxford conference play a central role in this initiative (information available from Prof. H.A. During these past few years the time has gone by quickly while we in Mohaseboon® were always alone struggling in every and whatever available event or occasion, either in Egypt or in the Middle East, taking the opportunities for highlighting the Academic, Economical and Business Segments in our societies; explaining the importance and how far the benefits of applying System Dynamicscan go; why it is an advanced tool for developing the different types of Business Management Systems, and also what is relating to it's methodologies for solving the most persistent problems.

 

While speaking about Modeling and Simulation Technology, and due to the fact of our prolonged experience and existence in this part of the world, it is the time to confess that 80% of those who became more nearest to the issue had admired the idea in general without showing later any further interest or some progress toward discovering much of the concerned details. Transparently speaking, some others had rejected the idea for different reasons while very few were showing a real interest but according to their own visions. Hence we decided to do something new and tangible.

 

At the middle of the last year 2005; precisely after Mr. Walid S. Badr returned back from Boston, we had concluded several crucial meetings in Mohaseboon® for finding a new strategy to achieve our goals; the conclusion was to establish a new practical "Hand-On" track for The Management Learning by applying System Dynamics Methodology. During the scratch preparations of the said strategy, the first step was to divide the industrial sectors into major segments as per the nature of the commodities. Fortunately Mr. Badr was at the final stages of his MBA thesis at Maastricht School of Management, MsM. His case study was relating to one of the major industrial sectors; the Egyptian's Automotive Industry. At the same time, he made up his mind to implement System Dynamics to his project, so the idea was sparked and the name was born as AutoDynamics at that moment.

 

We in Mohaseboon® appreciate the great contribution of time and efforts by Mr. Badr, and have to congratulate him for recently achieving his MBA successfully. Also we have to thank him again for leading his brilliant team for their professional works during more than seven months while seeking to develop his personal project application version to be used commercially and copyrighted to Mohaseboon®.


AutoDynamics©, Why?

 

"The automotive industry is extremely sensitive to market dynamics whether internal or external. Such sensitivity requires highly qualified calibers to manage and run the business with all its complicated mechanism. "Off the job training" has become an essential for developing skills in addition to job experience. However, till now, most training tools are rather theoretical or maybe case based workshops. Time and dynamism were factors; though very important, yet cannot be covered in traditional training techniques. A simulation is an experiential learning exercise. The emphasis is on practice and active learning within a cross-functional business experience. The players provide the living detail through their own deliberations, actions and interactions with competitors and the market. The exercise represents a series of interconnected cases. Every decision period represents a new case, a new set of circumstances. The students do not need to role play. "AutoDynamics" is a realistic simulation application designed to be use either by PC (one user) or throughout a Server (multi-user) , which has been developed for the automotive industry. The Nijmegen School of Management of Radboud University

The Nijmegen School of Management of Radboud University in the Netherlands offers a system dynamics course to bachelor students in business administration. In addition group model building is part of postdoctoral courses organized in collaboration with ABK and Sioo. In 2006 in-house workshops were conducted for Corus and TNO. A master thesis on maintenance planning at Shell/ NAM is currently being written. Research projects in the last year included a two months visit of Etiënne Rouwette to the University at Albany. A research project with the Dutch Ministry of Justice and Significant, started in 2004, has this year resulted in further adaptations of a model of criminal justice. At the Nijmegen School of Management Özge Pala and Eugene Zhuchenko are conducting PhD research on organizational decision making and system dynamics. An important part of our work this year was organizing the 24th System Dynamics Conference, to be held at our campus in July, together with Andreas Groessler from Mannheim University and Carolus Grütters from the Faculty of Law at Radboud University. In the coming year Marleen McCardle hope to start her PhD research on group decision making and system dynamics.

Significant is an independent research and consultancy company in the Netherlands. We focus on helping organisations to translate their policy and strategy aims into an optimum business model and on equipping organisations to deal with the future effects of far-reaching socio-economic (policy) changes. System dynamics is one of the quantitative and operations research methods that we use in our consulting practice. Gaining insight in complex problems by reducing complexity is our goal. We apply system dynamics (almost) always in combination with group model building. The modelling process is at least as important as the content.

 

Together with the Radboud University of Nijmegen we are a partner of the Dutch Ministry of Justice for simulation modelling. We have applied system dynamics on several ex ante studies regarding changing policies and new legislation regarding the criminal justice system. To mention some of the examples: we built a simulation model of the criminal justice chain and analysed the effects of the more repressive policies according to the Safety Program (closing the prosecution gap of 40,000 cases). Secondly we evaluated the effects of new legislation on collecting DNA from certain offenders and a different completion of cases by the public prosecution. We also evaluated the trade-off between traffic safety, enforcement, the number of speed penalties and congestion. At this moment we are preparing a simulation model on forensic psychiatry (mental health care for delinquents). These projects are always a close cooperation between Significant and employees (system dynamics practitioners and experts with respect to the content).

 

For the business day (Wednesday) at the Nijmegen conference we have organized sessions on healthcare and public policy (especially the criminal justice system). We hope to meet you at the conference!

Sioo was founded in 1958 by the Dutch universities. The foundation has served ever since as a bridge between academic organization studies and organizational practice and change processes. Ventana Systems UK are one of the partners collaborating in the InCoCo research project, a groundbreaking project that will enable companies to deliver integrated service solutions to industry.

 

The consortium of InCoCo was set up with the sense that a very high degree of complementarity and mutual support in respect of research activities and industrial goals can be achieved. This way, an interlinking of the various expertises intrinsic to the InCoCo consortium will provide top-quality results for the benefit of the industry and consumers in the European market area.


European, globally acting industrial firms from the manufacturing and IT sector have committed themselves to collaborate and to invest a substantial amount of human and financial resources in order to develop sustainable service integration in the manufacturing supply chain.

 

The challenge for increasingly global acting supply chains and service providers is to integrate and synchronize the services from external providers into the existing and continuously evolving networks and to successfully measure, control and evaluate the performance of these joint activities, both at the operational and strategic levels.

 

To facilitate collaboration between service and supply chain (SSC) partners, InCoCo aims to develop novel coordination procedures, enrich the frameworks for integrated measure of performances and finally develop decision support tools for this industry sector. Further, InCoCo will incorporate the results in these domains into a new pioneering framework for the development and management of the integrated SSC oriented production systems.

 

InCoCo's innovative vision is to fill this gap by integrating service processes into new S-SCOR model.

Ventana Systems, Inc.

Ventana Systems continues to pursue a variety of private and public sector projects while also moving forward with the development of Vensim.


On the people front Ventana is pleased to announce that Jim Hines, who is known to many in the Society, has joined us as a full time consultant. We have also recently hired Marios Kagarlis who has deep experience in detailed agent modeling making our scope of expertise broad.

 

On the project front our most public project has been the development of a National Airspace model for the Federal Aviation Administration and the JPO in the US. This model is being adopted to look at long-range plans for the development of infrastructure and the evolution of regulatory involvement in the airline industry. We have also become heavily involved in looking at issues in energy both from the public and private perspectives.

 

On the software front we continue to push the development of new tools to support new modeling activities while striving to make the tools of system dynamics available to the greatest possible audience. Planned releases include internationalization of the software into Japanese, Chinese and Portuguese, easing the language barrier for many.

Through a strong team of dedicated instructors who are the forerunners in system dynamics, WPI has the ability to offer extraordinary educational opportunities in this arena.  Our faculty include Jim Hines, Jim Lyneis, Bob Eberlein, Andrew Ford, Mike Radzicki, Kim Warren, and Khalid Saeed.  These professors have applied their research and experience to develop in-depth courses that use modeling and computer simulation to analyze real-world problems.  Khalid Saeed, PhD is the head of the Social Studies and Policy Studies Department and it is under his leadership that WPI's faculty recently approved a new Master of Science in System Dynamics.   

Proudly offering the only undergraduate major in system dynamics, we are making an immediate impact on young adults.  Additionally, we now offer the only online Master of Science degree program in system dynamics which includes courses such as Modeling Analysis and Evaluation Techniques, Real World System Dynamics, Strategy Dynamics and Environmental Dynamics.  The extensive curriculum in the system dynamics offerings can be pursued as single courses, five course certificate program, as well as the M.S.  All courses are offered completely online in an asynchronous format which allows students to participate in courses at a time that is convenient for them. Also available at WPI is a limited doctoral program focused on application of system dynamics to address public policy issues. Our current and graduated students in this program have worked on a variety of infrastructure policy related agendas.
