Construction by Replacement

Postby Bill Braun » Sun Mar 20, 2011 8:01 am

The article of this name by Hines et. al. in the January-March SDR mentions the inclusion of their hierarchy of SD molecules in the MIT Process Handbook. I am unable to locate the hierarchy. The specific examples of "bathtub" and "aging chain" mentioned in the article returned no entries. A search for "system dynamics" returns but one entry.

Any suggestions on locating the hierarchy in the handbook?

Hi Bill,

Funny you asked, I just was looking into this yesterday. I've found:
http://web.mit.edu/~paulopg/www/Hierarchy.pdf - an overview of the new hierarchy (from here)
molecule.pdf - a detailed overview of the older hierarchy (installed with the Molecules Vensim add-on)
http://web.mit.edu/~paulopg/www/Constru ... cement.pdf - the original paper

Bathtub and aging chain are described probably in the most detail in molecule.pdf, and when you install molecules you can see their implementation in Vensim as well.

Hi Bobby,

I did locate all three of the documents you cite. My read of the article (as well as a mention in the original paper you linked to) makes specific reference to entries (200 of them) in the MIT Process Handbook. I am most interested in them.

Some comments in the articles appear to draw a distinction between the research oriented Process Handbook and a more "public" one. References to both appear to land in the same place (http://ccs.mit.edu/ph/).

Also, there is a "Logout" link on the MIT Process Handbook but no corresponding "Login". I wonder if that is a factor.

Its possible its in the Windows version, available here:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/phrep/f ... esearchPH/

(unless you tried that already, you seem to be a step ahead of me!) It requires a commercial DLL which isn't on sale anymore, I plan on emailing the company later today about it. Will let you know what I find out.
