SD education and other diffusion activities

Post by Martin Schaffernicht » Tue Aug 07, 2012 8:47 am

Dear Chapters,
the Policy Council is paying much attention to Chapters, because they can bring people into contact with SD by a variety of activities - many of which can use the Internet and by the way increase electronic presence.
On behalf of the President, our attention has been called on a website developed since quite some years by Juán Martín Garcia from Spain:

http://www.dinamica-de-sistemas.com

If you stay on the Spanish page and go to 'Indice', then click any one of the dates to see a major amount of activity spread over a long time. Indeed, Juán has been developing his activities for more than a decade now. But then again, several Chapters have been operating for quite some years, too.

We would be interested to know the reaction to this of the different Society Chapters. Therefore I ask you:
- to review the website;
- to report whether there are any activities similar to this undertaken by your Chapter
- to tell us what opportunities exist to start some activities of this nature, with the aim of improving the profile of SD in their geographical area.

Please let us use this forum to discuss this topic and share important ideas!

Hi Martin

It seems anecdotal but what I like most in this site is the music. It shows that the site is newcomer oriented and makes some efforts to capture his attention even by ways not directly linked with SD, for example a mysterious and bewitching music.

Best regards.

Jean-jacques Laublé.

Hi,
yes, Juan Martín's work is indeed newcomer-oriented! Additionally he does it in Spanish language, and this is an advantage which should not be underestimated for the Latinamerican context.

And we might think about how to become more attractive to people from outside, I guess. My wife (nothing to do with SD) has asked me why we do not promote ourselves with some professional video spots, like others do (example. "design thinking"): a short clip which does not even try to explain what SD really is, just makes it look dynamic and attractive. I thought she had a point, because most of the videos on the Net do not have this goal - they are mostly more or less short lessons. Some are produced in a professional manner (I've seen some by Roy Zuñiga from Costa Rica's INCAE Business School) and some are rather aimed at people who already study SD.

I've also wondered if there could be an on-line course like the ones reported on in two Ted-Talks:
http://www.ted.com/talks/daphne_koller_ ... ation.html
http://www.ted.com/talks/peter_norvig_t ... sroom.html

Not to say we have to copy this. But if something comparable can be developed by outstanding SD professors, it would be attractive and provide a proven-quality entry point for newcomers.

Best greetings,
Martin

Dear Haiyan,

congratulations for this activity. The China Chapter has developed for over 30 years now, and I believe its members have created pretty much every kind of materials, and a stable and active "local" community.

Maybe that was the only way you could do it: a very huge country, the geographical, language and other distances from the rest of the SD people. But your success as a community was not guaranteed, you might have failed. Do you have an hypothesis concerning the development of the Chinese SD community?

Best greetings,
Martin

Something like this Martin? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nljmw1fO-Bg&feature=plcp It's not much of an SD model, but works as a lead-in to proper SD analysis. There is also an online course coming, aimed at ordinary business folk rather than SD specialists. Kim
