Re: Model Nesting

To clarify, SMILE/XMILE accounts for all of the following types of "submodels": 1. Substructure of a larger model that exists primarily for organizational reasons (but see my caveat at the end) - it reduces the complexity of the model, it allows independent development and testing, etc. - i.e., the ...

Re: SMILE and XMILE

Hi Magne, The case you are talking about is represented in SMILE within the inflow and outflow equations as follows: inflow: IF Stage = Stage1 THEN ProductionStarts ELSE WIP[Stage - 1]/ProdTime[Stage - 1] outflow: IF Stage = Stage22 THEN Shipments ELSE WIP[Stage]/ProdTime[Stage] I normally would not...

Re: SMILE and XMILE

That is mostly what I intended, Tom. The original purpose of SMILE by itself was to define the functionality of the language we wanted to encode, which also includes equation syntax to make it consistent in all encodings of the SD language. Bob's and Magne's discussion seems to be leaking into wheth...

Re: Sim Specs

That's an interesting point, Tom. XMILE currently allows macros to have variable sim specs (for precisely the purpose you describe), but not models, an asymmetry we should rectify.

Re: Model Nesting

These are both supported in the draft XMILE spec, as well as a third intermediate type: one that has a smaller DT so runs many times for each DT at the higher level (but has the same start and end). The first type you mention and the third type are treated directly as nested models while the second ...

Re: Proposal for an OASIS XMILE Technical Committee

Magne, Thank you for your considered response. I like how you lay out the issues and how you then propose a way forward. It is your careful thinking and breadth of knowledge (of the SD paradigm and tools) that argues so strongly for you to work with us in refining the draft standard. I do have a cou...

Re: Proposal for an OASIS XMILE Technical Committee

These are some interesting points. I very much hope that the standard does not stagnate and/or lock-in after version 1 and so not entertain radical departures. The issue of supporting all these modeling paradigms is an extremely complex one. I believe the basic file format as proposed can be expande...

Re: Proposal for an OASIS XMILE Technical Committee

I also agree with Travis. Well said. Interchange with other systems and languages is what it is all about. By the way, Travis, in his first paragraph, perfectly describes the reasoning we went through in the SD community some years ago when this started. The feeling was if we tried to do everything ...

Re: Proposal for an OASIS XMILE Technical Committee

Hi Robert, I want to personally apologize for not posting an announcement here earlier. The OASIS procedure requires the charter be reviewed for two weeks before the open call for participation goes out, and I was waiting for that hurdle to be crossed. Hopefully, the call for participation will go o...
