July 20 – 24, 2008 ---  Athens, Greece

Hosted by: Hellenic Chapter, System Dynamics Society

Conference Information
Call for Papers, Presentations, Workshops and Sessions

Athens 2008
The 2008 conference will be staged in the cradle of Western civilization. Athens is one of the oldest cities in the world and the birthplace of Socrates who some say was one of the first systems thinkers!

Location
Greece is proud of its tradition of hospitality. On this occasion many delegates might choose to extend their stay and visit historical sites or relax with their family on one of the islands. The services of a travel agent will be available to arrange post-conference tours. The Athenaeum InterContinental is one of the most prominent hotels in Athens with a significant history of hosting conferences. The hotel boasts excellent views of the Acropolis and Mount Lycabetus.

Venue
The Athenaeum InterContinental hotel is located on the edge of downtown Athens. Plaka (the old town) is within walking distance and the beach is a short tram ride away. There is also a metro (subway). Wi-Fi access is available throughout the hotel. For detailed information about the conference venue visit www.intercontinental.com/athens

Athens is well served by air from Europe and Asia-Pacific. There are a number of direct flights from the USA. Transfer to the hotel takes around 40 minutes by cab.

Program
The conference program will consist of invited and contributed sessions and workshops demonstrating the state of the art in the theory and application of system dynamics.

In addition, panel discussions, special interest group sessions, student colloquia, the modeling assistance workshop, vendor displays, exhibits, demonstrations, Society business meetings and other related activities will be scheduled. The conference location and the conference schedule will provide time for relaxed social and professional interaction.

The conference will bring together diverse perspectives on the application of system dynamics to important issues in the theory of complex dynamic systems and the practical use of these tools to address critical real-world challenges. A small sampling of the topics to be addressed includes:

  • Regional, national and global economic dynamics
  • Environmental and ecological challenges
  • Health care policy
  • Agent-based and evolutionary modeling
  • Industry evolution: interactions of competition and organizational capabilities
  • Corporate strategy
  • Organizational change and improvement in business and beyond
  • Project management and product development
  • Public safety and security
  • Dynamic decision making and experimental studies
  • Nonlinear dynamics
  • Public policy applications
  • Dynamics of information systems
  • Developments in simulation tools and techniques for model analysis and visualization
  • Advances in the modeling process and group model building
  • System dynamics contributions to theory building in the social and natural sciences
  • Teaching systems concepts and dynamics in the K-12 grades, universities, and beyond
  • Many others

Submissions
Papers may be submitted from January 2, 2008 to March 21, 2008 and must be in sufficient detail for the referees to judge their meaning and value. Submissions must be in English and should be 5 - 30 pages in length (there is also a maximum 2 MB electronic file size). Abstracts will not be accepted. Submission of models and other supporting materials to enable replication and aid the review process is encouraged in all cases (maximum file size 2 MB in addition to the paper). For more details on paper submissions please see the conference website.

Each paper must have a designated presenter and one individual can be a designated presenter for at most two works. Due to scheduling demands, designated presenters not registered by May 30, 2008 will have their papers automatically removed from the schedule. All attendees, whether presenting or not, must register for the conference.

All works submitted will be assigned for double blind peer review. The results, with the oversight of the program chair, will determine whether a work will be accepted, and, if so, the presentation format for the work.

Notifications of acceptance will be sent by May 9, 2008. Authors retain the copyright to all submitted work and, by submitting, grant permission for inclusion in the conference proceedings.

Proposals for workshops and tutorials are welcome and should be submitted online via the Society website.

Proposals for plenary or parallel sessions, panel discussions, roundtable sessions and other pre- or post- conference activities are welcome. Proposals should contain a brief description of the session theme, names of organizer(s) and a tentative list of all papers to be included in the session.

Session proposals are due by March 21, 2008. Send proposals to isdc08-sbs@salford.ac.uk.

Good work in system dynamics is often relevant to multiple communities. The conference promotes the diffusion of knowledge generally and system dynamics particularly. Work that has been submitted to, accepted for, or already presented at another conference, or accepted but not yet published in a journal, will be reviewed for acceptance. Work already published in a journal, in English, should not be submitted.

Submission Format
Preliminary and final submissions must be received in .pdf format. Other formats will not be accepted.

At the time of submission of each work, please fill out the online form (contact information for all author(s) with a 200-word abstract) and upload up to three updateable files. The first will be the body of the work with no author information for blind review; the second is the version for the web proceedings with a 200-word abstract and complete author information; and the third, any supporting material, including models, submitted as a single file or a .zip archive.

Materials must be submitted online via the Society website. Authors will be asked to complete a short questionnaire about the appropriate session placement and format for their presentation at the time of submission.

Conference Proceedings
A conference pack will include the program with Printed Abstract Proceedings for all presented papers. The Conference Web Proceedings including final versions of papers will be posted on the Society website after the conference. Full works for all presentations will be included in the web proceedings.
