A brief Update for the 1999 Conference in NZ as requested.

We have commenced our planning at this end: we need to confirm dates shortly. Following from an email from George, it seems to us that the best dates will be Tuesday 20 July 1999 - Friday 23 July. This, as George points out, will allow people to travel from North America on the Friday or Saturday (gaining a day as they pass the dateline) and arriving in NZ on the Sunday or Monday. They can depart on the Friday night and (losing day on the way back) will be back in their offices Monday morning.

It would be good to have the Council's agreement to these dates asap.

We have met with the University's fund-raisers and have a number of proposals for sponsorship - I already have an offer of sponsorship from Air New Zealand who have offered a 75 percent discount on one economy class seat from the US to NZ for a "Guest Speaker" who would be known as the Air New Zealand Guest Speaker. I am not certain we will accept this offer. AirNZ would be the official carrier and some discounts on fares to participants would be available but we may be able to do better. They would provide however various printed materials to help with promotion, etc.

I presume that the commercial companies associated with the Conference will be wanting to have stands etc. at the Conference and that they will pay us a fee for that. Can you supply details of what the usual arrangements have been and whom the Companies concerned are likely to be?

We plan to have a meeting here of our local organising committee to proceed on the issues of Sponsorship in the next 2 - 3 weeks. It would be my plan to have these details finalsied by May, a brochure promoting the conference ready by June and this to be distributed at the 1998 conference.

Hope this is sufficient at this stage - and look forward to hearing from you shortly. Once we have dates confirmed we will proceed with bookings etc.
