Background of Organization The College of Public Health, formed in 2007, is currently seeking accreditation (the MPH program is already accredited). The College is the only such entity in Nebraska and in a multi-state region. Both the College and the department are growing, creating opportunities for academic leadership and innovation, in addition to an environment conducive to collaborative research. The College of Public Health recently launched a Center for Global Health to capitalize on opportunities for collaboration and cross-national training with institutions in Kenya, China, India, Indonesia, among other countries. The College will occupy its own building in 2010, bringing together faculty across 5 departments and several research centers. UNMC is a growing institution; its ranking among research universities has risen in recent years, thanks to meeting aggressive goals to increase extramural and internal support for research activity.

Position title Open-Rank Faculty in Systems Modeling and Public Health

Position description The College of Public Health at the University of Nebraska Medical Center seeks candidates for an open-rank faculty position in the Department of Health Promotion, Social and Behavioral Health. The successful candidate must be committed to developing research and fostering the Department’s educational mission which includes a PhD program, an MPH concentration in community health, and plans for several innovative joint degree programs. In addition, the successful candidate is expected to co-lead the planning and development of a new center for systems science in public health along with the Department Chair. We seek an individual who is ready for new challenges, with a strong record of academic recognition, peer-reviewed publications, and a proven ability to secure extramural funding. Specific areas of interest include the development and application of systems modeling, such as system dynamics modeling, agent-based modeling, integrated macro-micro simulations, to complex public health problems. The Department performs research and training in a broad spectrum of public health issues, including obesity, nutrition, physical activity, substance use, adolescent risk behaviors, sexual health, smoking, environmental sustainability and health, community health, health disparities, and cross-cultural and global health. The incumbent will also have the opportunity to collaborate with other expertise areas within the College such as health economics, health policy, medical geography, epidemiology, biostatistics, and environmental, agricultural, and occupational health.
Required skills Candidate should have a PhD or equivalent degree from any relevant discipline, such as public health, social or natural sciences, engineering, and computer science, among others. Experience and interest in the application of systems thinking and systems modeling to major public health issues are essential.
Desired Skills Specific areas of interest include the development and application of systems modeling, such as system dynamics modeling, agent-based modeling, integrated macro-micro simulations, to complex public health problems.
