Position description

Professorship in Systems Sciences
(40 hours a week; limited to the period of 2 years according to § 99 UG; starting Sept. 1st, 2011)

Research responsibilities and focus:
The research focus of this position is defined with systems science, especially systems modelling (e.g., agentbased modelling or System Dynamics), and system assessment in terms of sustainable development. Part of the research profile is also transition and adaptation processes of human environment systems based on the challenges of global change. A close cooperation with the second professorship at ISIS, the professorship of sustainability management, is requested. The holder of the position shall do research on international standards, capture innovative research questions in an interdisciplinary context as well as initiate and carry out transdisciplinary research in a regional field.

Teaching responsibilities:
The holder of the position will be responsible for teaching the subject of systems science and provide suitable teaching methods that meet the needs of participants in the programmes offered by the institute. Furthermore, the holder of the position will supervise bachelor’s essays, master's theses and dissertations and contribute to the coordination of international study programs as well as building a PhD-program. Emphasis hereby relies on the integration of systems science with different social sciences, economic sciences and natural sciences (especially the main courses of the environmental systems science field of study) as well as with the theoretical sciences of mathematics and statistics. Research driven teaching in German and English, partly also in interdisciplinary teams, is required.

Qualification requirement for the application is the habilitation or equivalent. The applicant must provide proof of internationally recognised academic achievements in form of publications and experience in the acquisition, execution, and collaboration of international research projects. The applicant should document her/his own practical teaching experience at university level by listing the content of previously taught courses. Furthermore, the applicant should be capable and willing to teach courses in English. The applicant is expected to utilize and further develop existing regional and international networks and cooperations. Finally, the applicant must provide proof of her/his executive qualifications as well as of her/his social competence and management skills, especially in project management. The applicant should be willing and capable of actively contributing to autonomous, academic self-administration at every level. In order to be able to optimally fulfil these tasks we expect him/her to have his/her permanent residence in Graz or its surroundings. Furthemore, we also expect competence in the field of gender mainstreaming.
