| Background of Organization |
The Policy Analysis department of Delft University of Technology develops and tests methods and techniques for supporting policy/decision making in multi-actor systems contexts. Specific fields of methodological expertise include System Dynamics Modelling, Agent-Based Modelling, Formal Analysis, Exploratory Analysis and other approaches for analysing and dealing with deep uncertainties in long-term strategic planning. Application domains include energy (especially transitions to more sustainable energy systems), inter/national safety and security, and water governance. |

| Position title |
Post-Doc -- SD and AB Modeling and Simulation: Accelerating the Dutch and European Energy Transition |
| Job location |
Jaffalaan 5, Delft, The Netherlands |
| Position description |
The post-doc researcher will develop and use systems simulation models related to the built environment within the energy system as a whole, and analyse the resulting system behaviours over time in order to (1) identify combinations of structures that cause systemic inertia and (2) policies that help to accelerate the (Dutch and European) energy system transition.
The modelling/simulation used for this research will be exploratory and hybrid.
Exploratory model use consists of (1) experimenting with many relatively simple model structures and mechanisms (feedbacks, decision-making processes, interaction processes, policies, and scenarios) in order to explore and analyse the different kinds of behaviours that could plausibly be generated, and (2) testing the robustness of policies given many different model structures and a plethora of uncertainties.
The models will also have to integrate system-level feedbacks and actor-level complexity in hybrid System Dynamics / Agent-Based models.
Both generic and specific models will be developed for the built environment and the related (Dutch and European) energy systems. Most of the models will also be turned into games that will be used by a PhD student to test real actor behaviour within these systems, and to help real actors policy-makers to understand the consequences of their actions and policies.

| Required skills |
The ideal candidate would have a background in modelling and simulation (both SD and ABM), a strong interest in energy transitions (more specifically the transition of the European and Dutch built environment), and a desire to work in a multi-disciplinary environment. |
| Desired Skills |
Being able to communicate in Dutch is an advantage. |
