Why Build Models in the First Place?

Given that the stated goal of this online book is to teach basic system dynamics concepts and modeling techniques, it is legitimate to step back and ask: Why build models in the first place? Are there some advantages to be gained from the creation of system dynamics models? In general what, if anything, is to be gained from the creation of models?
